America was basically the same, the superpower that controls world economy and nuclear arms development.

It is always better to look back over the years with nostalgia, and perhaps rightly so in some cases. But it is not always the case... For instance, not many Americans will look back on George Bush Jr's tenure with the nostalgia that greets a popular, peaceful and prosperous tenure.
With the democrats six years ago, one could probably say that America has had economic prosperity up until then and was relatively peaceful and a President who (although lame-duck), was still popular. So, we could say it was possible to look back with a bit of nostalgia.
Were the democrats coasting six years ago? I would say yes, because Senator Kerry had little or nothing to offer the American people, so Bush returned. Al Gore, despite his squeeky clean political and family image, really had little or no bite at all, so paved the way for Bush to squeeze through the first time around. The democrats this time around have a lot to prove now that they have both houses...I hope they can prove to the American people that they can deliver, because this nation desperately needs a miracle to recover from Bush's nightmares and headaches.

6 years ago, the Dems weren't in power, there was a GOP controlled Congress. The only reason the economy was the way it was is because of the Congress. If there is a Democratic president and a Republican Congress, the President can't do anything too liberal or against Conservative values or it will be vetoed, and vice-versa. The Executive and Legislative branches have to work together!

When Clinton left office America was the most admired and respected nation on earth, possibly more so than at any time since the immediate post-WWII period. After 9/11, the entire world stood beside us.
Now, six year later, we are the most hated and despised nation on earth. Our dignity and honor has been dragged through the mud by a lying and hypocritical administration that does not care about the American people, let alone anyone else in the world. Terrorist organizations are more popular, powerful, and effective than ever (more than Bin-laden even could have dreamed), while Bush has turned America into an emasculated weakling so pathetic that countries like North Korea and Iran now routinely punk our President to his face. Bush does nothing but stutter and mumble little-boy threats that no one takes seriously.

Now that the democrats know what doesn't work and this repbulican stuff is a mess it will take the democrats a while to clean up. My final answer is yes. Think they knew what to do all along but republicans were out for the payoff and didn't listen.
