Asoka, the great. although the movie was very good and based on some actual facts, most of it was fiction.
Asoka was the greatest ruler of the maurya dynasty. he was a warrior, who spread his kingdom almost to the whole of India. he fought only one major war in his lifetime...the battle of kalinga. he saw so much pain and human suffering that he had a change of heart, and this is why he is called great, and no just a ruler.

he gave up the policy of war and started a peaceful rule. he termed his policy of peace as dhamma. he leaned towards Buddhism, preached peace, banned killing of animals, spread the message of Buddha to south east Asia and Afghanistan, he wrote inscriptions on stone pillars and walls of caves to tell the people the importance of peace and moral integrity.

Asoka was a great humanist, and a benevolent king, who is known for adopting and preaching Buddhism in India and abroad.

i hope this helps..if you want more information, just google his name and you'll get information about many Indian history sites.

as for the movie, i loved it, but only the part about war and Asoka's subsequent remorse is true...rest is all made up or taken from buddhist lore.
