I work at Jewel and I would like to know the law regarding liqour sales. I want to know if you have to card everybody in the same party that looks under 30 or do you just have to card the person actually buying the liqour. Lets say if their are three people together in line and I ask just the person paid, can I get in trouble if the other person is underage and gets caught outside my store and he happens to be underage. Their are cameras above each register to record each transaction, so would they look at the cameras to see I carded the one that I was buying. If a decoy comes in, how do they go about doing it. Do they buy it and then your busted to selling for underage, or the they test secound party sales as well. Like selling it to the person buying, then they give it to the younger person. I tried asking and knowone seems to know the rules. Some people say yes and some people say know.

You only have to card the person paying for the alcohol...just think, you wouldn't card a child in the store with his mother. It's the same principle. You can only do your part in preventing the sale to minors...if the person buying the beer gives it to a minor than it is his butt that the cops will arrest, not yours. If you think that the person of legal age is buying it for minors call the police and tell them. Try to get a description of the kids, the adult and the car.
When police do a sting they send the underage person into the store to buy. If they buy successfully underage they come out to the officer's squad car and tell them and then the officer comes in with the kid to ID you as the seller and they issue a ticket to you.

I am from IL so I'll give you a serious answer. Basically, Law Enforcement isn't looking for a way to bust you. You are expected to utilize reasonable care to assure that you are not breaking any laws. Here are the steps you should take:

1. Discuss with your supervisor/ store manager what the policy
is regarding groups where it appears to you that there may be
some illicit purpose being attempted. The store has a lot more
to lose than you do.

2. The cameras you mention are there for the store's protection
and for yours. Sure, they'll catch you if you skim out of the
register, but they also provide a permanent record of your
actions in any situation, which can prove you used good
judgement.

3. Your reference to "decoys"---are you talking about someone
sent in by police to see if you will sell without verifying age?
If so, that is perfectly legal for them to do, and you would be
responsible.

4. As long as you use common sense, you should be OK. If in
doubt, call your superior over and let HIM or HER decide.
That's what they are being paid to do----deal with situations
outside the routine.

Good luck to you. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, and with that attitude you should be successful not only in your current job, but in the future too. I hope I've given you some help.
