Roots was a great book (and a great mini series for TV, also.) It really made people think about where they came from and how they got here.

Roots by Alex Haley brings back memories of the 1970s. Roots was made into a TV mini-series showing on ABC TV for over one week. Teachers in the class assigned us written assignments in regard to the show. As far as the book, it was a best-seller on the NY Times best seller's list for a while, yet it was the TV mini-series that made Roots so popular.

Yes it is. I read it years ago and it fascinated and horrified me. I recently read that Alex Haley was sued by another guy who wrote 'The African' for stealing large excerpts from that book. Haley paid up £650,000 after blaming it on his researchers who he'd asked to find out some information about slavery. Haley said he had been unaware of the origin of the information.
I had been planning to go to the Gambia to see where Kunta Kinte' - the main character in the book - came from but don't really want to go to his village if the trips are run by white people as it'd mean the white man is still making money at the black mans expense.

I didn't read the book, but the TV series was totally awesome. That is the way I like to learn history...it shows you what went on in the world in the past, and you can relate it to what is happening now.

The book is brilliant if the series is a reflection of same.

It was well written and highly readable. I also thought that the characters were well developed and you cared what happened to them. I also felt I got some insight about life in Africa and the horrors for those who had been captured in crossing the Atlantic and then in slavery.
