I have a 2001 used malibu, recently I've been having this problem where this theft light is blinking preventing the car to start, its been this twice before, but after 8 hours its starts perfectly with no problems for months, this last time, still hasnt turned on....... I never put a theft sys in the car personal but it looks like one was installed before i got the care, if the dealership deactativated the sys could the computer once in awhile ready the sensor

does the key have the little resistor "chip" embedded in it? Pass-key

If it does, I can almost promise that I know the problem. people will say to clean the chip with an eraser, others will say alcohol, still others will say to get a new key.

Those were temporary fixes.
The problem is the contacts in the ignition switch that read the impedence across the chip start to crack.

From my experience, this will happen more and more often until you have the switch replaced.

I got a 99 Malibu with a theft alarm in it and the people I got it from says there were two keychain activators with it but were lost a while ago. I was told to go to a gm dealer with serial number from car for replacements.

Your car has a factory anti-theft system inccorporated in the ign key cyl. but it does not sound a alarm or turn on outside lights. If someone installled a after market car alarm ,then it has made it more difficult to diagnois. first step ,have it scanned for codes and if theft-related codes are present ,you will have to have that repaired first.then proceed from there
