There's no one brand of guitar that you should buy. It depends a lot on how the individual guitar is made.
First you should know that there are a few different price ranges for guitars, and in general, the more expensive, the better. However, a guitar that has fancy things like lots of inlay will be more expensive, but won't sound any better than its plainer counterparts.
Any guitar that you can get for under $150-$200 or so isn't going to be very good (unless you're getting a phenomenal deal). If you think that you'll take it somewhat seriously and get better, there's no reason why you shouldn't start out on a better-sounding instrument right away. If you sound better, it'll be more motivating and you'll want to continue. If you aren't sure that you'll stick with it, get a $50 guitar and then you won't be out that much money when you leave it.
When you are shopping for a guitar, take a friend along who plays the kind of music you want to play, and have your friend play the different guitars you are considering. Listen to the sound and choose a guitar that you think sounds nice. Ask for your friend's opinion. Take along someone who really knows how to play. Many people know how to play one song, but that's not the same as knowing how to play the guitar. If you have a teacher, bring your teacher. Even two guitars that are exactly the same make and model will sound different, so it's very important to listen to the guitar you are considering.
There are different styles of guitars, and each style is designed to have different sounds that complements the kind of music you are playing. If you are playing classical music, you will surely want to get a classical guitar. If you are playing folk, rock, or country, a dreadnought is the typical guitar that you might choose.
Don't be shy to shop around a bit. Also, sometimes pawn shops have nice guitars for pretty cheap.
Enjoy learning to play the guitar! (I recommend folk music, not that hard stuff that makes you feel angry.)

I've been playing electric guitar for 2 years and finally bought an acoustic. I didn't want anything great, just something that I could take places without having to bring my amp. So I bought one of those player packs things and it's been great for me. It came with a Yamaha F325 guitar. It was about $150. Check out the Sam Ash web site, they have great deals, they probably have a store near where you live.

If you're not sure you will be committed, buy a cheapie from a music supplier like Elderly instruments or First Quality music supplies. Yamaha, Alavarez, Tacaminie, etc are low-end makers that make decent entry-level guitars.

Yamaha or Fender. I would go with a Yamaha for around $150. They are study and sound good.
Have someone at the shop tune it for you and fool around with it to make sure that there are no oscillations.
