First, it is important to consider your budget. Do you want areas as cold as the East Coast or do you want areas with no snow like California.
I had been in California x 6 months & surprisingly people there hadnt even explored their places.
San Francisco is a lovely city. You can go there by yourself with just a map. You can ride the Muni bus & BART ( try riding round trip & see the Contra Costa county which includes Concord, Pittsburgh, Antioch, etc. ). Try riding the cable car going to Fisherman's wharf. Get a double decker city tour there if you want or an option of going to Golden Gate, Sonoma or Napa
( wine counties), Monterey, Yosemite!
I had also been to the congested LA. It is a bit warmer there than in San Francisco. Anaheim is where Disneyland & California Adventure is, Buena Park has Knottsberry Farm, see Hollywood & Universal Studios.
San Diego has a different beauty than LA. LA is more city life, San Diego is more quiet. The climate in San Diego is favorable the year round. You can visit Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park. Try riding the trolley to appreciate the whole of San Diego since it is widespread. There are buses in every trolley station. See Legoland at Carlsbad, the beautiful view of Oceanside & the spectacular view of Coronado. Coronado Bridge is one of the most tallest bridges in the world. It was awarded because of its structure. Hotel Coronado is one of the most beautiful hotel not only in the USA but also in the world. See the last American exit at San Isidro. There is an outlet store there.
I had been studying the 50 states through Microsoft Encarta for Kids 2005, Microsoft Premium DVD 2006 & Yahoo travel, it has a slidehow of each of the 50 states & the top 10 popular attractions in each place. You can visit it through their websites.

It depends on what you like. If you like a city I'm sure there are many to go to. If you're looking to be in an interresting place that's naturally stunning then Hawks Nest in West Virginia is amazing. There are a lot of things to do there too. Aside from the resort being great and the views being flat out gorgeous there's tons of stuff to do. The New River Gorge is a nice site to see (one of the largest in the world) that's very close to it. It's a great vacation if you're looking to do just that; take a vacation! It seems many people go on what they call vacation and do nothing but stay on a schedule and stay busy. If you want somewhere that's just relaxing and beautiful, it's the best place in the US I've seen.

If you're looking for a tropical place look at St. Croix. It's gorgeus and in the USA. Florida and California have awesome beaches.

Great scenery, you have to go to Oklahoma or Montana. They have the most beautiful mountains. You can also go to Niagra Falls or Hawaii.
