Tell them what they want to hear. That will be kind of tough, because different people want different things. But if you do it right, you can say stuff in such a way that you sound like you are giving different people the different things they want at the same time. And, of course, you must let people know that you feel their pain and make sure that you say stuff like we should "do it for the children." People love children, so this works well. Make sure you are anti-criminal. Be sure you are tough on crime, not fair on crime. Both Democrats and Republicans are tough on crime. If your opponents want to put jaywalkers in prison, be sure to support the death penalty for it. And be pro-school. Be sure to be pro-choice, but also pro-children, and anti-death penalty (except for jaywalkers). Remember, it's all in the timing.
And just before a condemned man is executed, look pained about it and listen to his attorneys about clemency, but then let it happen.
Apparently, people don't like Iraq anymore. Be sure to go against the President. Be sure to be anti-terrorist, but support their rights. Once you are president, don't dare look cross-eyed at the terrorists you catch, but it's okay to kill as many as you don't catch. But don't dare let 911 happen again. Since you can't interrogate any terrorists, you'll have to be clairvoyant to determine when the next 911 will happen or where to get more terrorists (or you can just hope that the terrorists like us now; you never know).
And be sure not to raise taxes, but spend as much money as you can on the people. People think that government money grows on trees. Well, actually, the government makes money, so maybe you can do that. Of course, you can print more money, but that'll raise inflation. But you can always put caps on prices. But that'll cause shortages and then only the rich can have stuff. But then you can sock it to the rich by raising their taxes and that'll satisfy the poor. And then no one will have stuff, but you'll be president.
So, in summary, just say what the people want to hear and promise stuff. Do it again in four years. If you are forced to deliver to get re-elected, don't worry, you'll be out of office before your economic policies cause the next depression to hit.

What do you support?
What are you against?
Democrat or Republican?
No one can help you unless you put some details about yourself.
One small information
It doesn't have to be something that puts you at risk.
