A Tensor is a Multilinear Mapping on a Manifold. You start to learn about them when you take a course on Differential Geometry and you start to learn about Manifolds.

It is a generalisation of the idea of vector field, which can be thought of as a 'vector that varies from point to point'.

magnitude & direction in xy plane = vector
magnitude & direction in xyz plane = tensor
