Applying mascara takes a little practice to get right, but once you have it down, you're good.
I usually begin by applying it to just the tips of my eyelashes first (this is supposed to help lengthen them), then I slowly sweep the brush over my entire lash, from bottom to top. I then take an eyelash comb to help seperate the lashes and get rid of any clumps (FYI: I only apply it to my upper lashes, but many people like to put it on their lower lashes as well). If you get a little bit on the top of your eyelid, just dampen a Q-tip and lightly dab it on the smudge.
As for which kind to buy, it all depends on what type of lashes you already have, and your personal preference. If your lashes are long but seem kind of thin, you should try one that says 'thickening'. On the other hand, try a 'lengthening' formula if you have shorter lashes . There are also waterproof mascaras, but I find these don't do as much for your lashes and are only good for swimming (or if you think you might cry a lot). There are many decent drugstore brands you can try without spending too much money (Loreal, Cover Girl, Maybelline, Almay). My personal favorite is Almay's One Coat Lengthening because it hardly smudges at all and makes my lashes look long but natural.
The key is to remember to be patient, and just have fun with it. Good luck. :)

This is what I find works best for me:
1. pump the applicator, this helps distribute mascara on the brush evenly
2. look down (while looking into the mirror, of course) and hold the brush underneath the upper lashes
3. move your lashes up and down
4. try to coat the corner (both inner & outer) lashes using the tip of the brush
5. swipe the brush lightly over the lower lashes.
Repeat the process if you need.

Its not tough at all.
Start at the root of your lashes and brush through.
Don't put the brush in and out of the tube too many times while applying as this causes air to dry out the mascara too quickly.
There are a few good brands out there: Mabelline, MAC and my favorite: Lancome (I only buy this on pay-day!!!!)

Its relatively easy, don't worry about opening your mouth, it actually helps you keep your eye open. Start from the root and brush upwards, be careful though, a mascara brush in the eye HURTS. You can lightly brush the ends of your lashes before doing the whole thing to create longer lashes.

I love Loreal voluminous.
Before you put it on put loose powder under you eyes then if any gets down there it is easier to get off. Wait until any that gets on your skin dries then use a q-tip to remove it.

The bst I've tried is the bare minerals one: i.d. weather everything waterproof mascara. technique is to just sweep the lashes from base to tip, wiggling it at the tip for curl.
