Following the Oxford rules of word contractions, in England around 1889 some people started to contract the first word of "Association Football". According to Oxford rules, you had to add "-er" to the short form of the word.
The short form of the word "Association" was assoc.
assoc. + er = assocer, wich derived into soccer.
