the article from 40 years ago must have been wrong, or more likely more accurate observations revealed that the asteroid posed no danger to earth. The only asteroid that "MIGHT" hit the earth that is known of is the asteroid discovered in 2004 and named Apophis. it will come very close to earth in 2029, so close that it might be pulled into an orbit that will hit the earth on its next approach in 2036
however we will not know for sure until we get more accurate measurements of its orbit, probably not till its approach in 2029.
So don't worry about it, by then we should be able to deflect it, if it indeed will be on a collision course.

This is a very hard question to answer directly as there is so much to it. I do feel that DoCS and the other government child protection units around Australia all need to come under review and things need to change. However I do not feel that the blame for this can be left solely with them. Yes they should have investigated further and quicker when the childs father expressed his concern. But then to be fair to them they recieve a LOT of complaints all of similar nature and many are hoaxes and many are real life and death situations. I can't find the words for what I think of this girls mother, this poor girl and this poor little baby. Also at the end of the day some responsibility needs to be taken by the girl herself, as whilst yes she is only 12yo and shouldn't have been given the opportunity to go this far, she is also old enough to have some idea of what she is doing. The boyfriend also, at 15 he too is still a kid but old enough to know better. I also think the sex ed programs offered in schools need to be reviewed as at 12yo she may or may not be quite in the year where I believe they start these classes, and the age of sexual activity is getting younger and younger all the time. I hope serious action is taken against the mother first and foremost, and that she isn't let off the hook while everybody goes blaming the government. Gosh I could go on all night about this but that is the main of my opinion.

I once spoke to an astro_physician in Aix en Provence (france) a certain Jean-Pierre Petit. He works for the French Govt and also writes books. He told me that there are from time to time bits of asteroids coming towards earth, they come from all directions. However there is one place where theyre coming from, where the asteroid material is bigger each time that a bunch of them come. In around 10 to 20 years time they will most likely be uncomfortably large and more of them too, when a star blows up all the little bits are shot out first, then the bigger bits follow, then whatever i suppose follows that.
He also told me that not only the american govt wont say anyuthing about it, but every govt are keeping quiet about this as it is first, not sure if there is a direct threat. and secondly, how would one tell the world about a forthcoming disaster like that?
Whatever the truth is, we celts were always right to be afraid that the sky might fall on our heads!

When you got to the part about "but the Americans think its now," you are off the page of the 40-year-old clipping. Where did you get this more up-dated information? Even if we assume the old clipping was authentic, there's been 40 years for recalculations.
What you would need to do is get the old clipping to a professional astronomer and ask them if there's any way to identify the object -- a catalog number, or whatever -- and therefore find out where it is now and what its trajectory seems to be.

Yes, I have heard of an asteroid name Aposphas (I'm not sure that I spell it right or not) that was predicted to hit earth between the year of 2010-1020. And Yes of course the American have4e been concentrating pretty hard about getting rid of it until recently I heard that they have stopped and say: In the future there will be more advance technology and they can figured out how to get rid of it by then...

There is supposed to be a very close-call that will pass closer than the distance between the Earth and the Moon. If I remember correctly it will be around 2011

If it were currently believed to be a threat, it would be the only item in the media. Instead, it doesn't appear at all.........get the picture?
