Is it similar to Christmas, is it a big deal, is it good?

I've just looked it up on wikipedia, apparently it is a holiday in America, on the 4th thursday in november, where everybody gets the day off and eats turkey.

The UK equivalant is harvest Festival, which nobody cares about and takes place on a Sunday so we don't get a day off.

Do you think we should get a day off in the UK and feast on turkey?

Thanksgiving is not the same as Christmas. Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus. The exchanging of gifts mimics the three wise men who brought gifts for their new king. Thanksgiving is remembrance of the first time the Native Americans and the Pilgrims came together, almost like family. Each person brought something new to the table and that ended up creating a feast. Because these two groups of people fought for so long, this day was a major success in creating peace. I think that is why it became a National Holiday. Thanksgiving is a good way to sit back a reflect on your life and to show your thanks for all you have been given. Even though it is a American tradition, everyone could celebrate it because it is not a religious day, it is more like a family day. I'm sure if you started a community petition, and if you got enough signatures on everyone agreeing that your harvest festival should be considered a holiday to spend with your family, I bet you could find out who you could take them to and go from there. You could do it, anything is possible! Happy Thanksgiving!

Each country's customs are different...you'd need to write to the appropriate government people there to voice your concerns. Let them take it from there. You know the obvious solution...get citizenship in the US., then you'll get all or part of the day off depending on what type work you do.
