who owns the diamonds and gold mines in africa? certainly not the africans! the mines are resources of the country and SHOULD BELONG to the country and only the country but evil greedy mean came in and STOLE all the natural resources of the land and therefore they are responsible for all the woes in the country, look at south africa for example apartheid was the order of the day for years, the rich europeans came in and stole everything while the people of the country lived in misery SHAME SHAME SHAME!! the US should continue giving whatever it can give because it is in a position to do so
they should buy the food and ship it, instead of giving money, because money for the poor almost always ends up in the wrong hands, and even when the food is there people still take advantage, just imagine a UN official commanding an 8 year old food for sex, HOW EVIL !! these things happen all the time yet swept under the rug, i think more schools should be built and free education given by sending volunteer teachers there, education is the key, also trees should be planted everywhere they can grow

We are not helping Africa when all the world stills dealing with Africa governments. But Africa is a big continent. That was explored by the Europeans for 500 years until 1990!
And during that time they were slaves, going to America (they were the ones working on the boats when Europeans got to America!)
So... I think that human kind has the obligation of feeling guilty about it! And try to do something. This money issue is always the same: corruption: the money is serving small interests, not the important causes. And all the world is selling guns to civil wars happening for 30 years now... Should we not feel guilty when we are getting from them the diamonds, the oil and the gold? And not giving health conditions, telling people how to take care of themselves and baby's? A lot of African country's have presidents that should be next to Saddam, not making deals with the rich countries! Aren't we responsible for doing something about?

Yes we should keep giving money to Africa considering the fact that the U.S.had a part in the plight of African countries like Nigeria and the Congo. If you look at history you will find that the U.S. have supported some of the wost dictators there been for our own advantage(take the cold war for example). The U.S. should use the money to help Africans take control of the abundance of natural resources they have.

Yes to helping Africa. Our country puts on the act like we are seriously concerned about Africa, and the state of despair it is in. Yet, we are spending all of our money and efforts on the war, causing even more destruction to another country. Basically, we need to get our priorities straight and do the right thing. I think out country feels we will look weak if we don't do the "macho" war thing.

The governments in Africa are very fraudulent and the money rarely goes to help the people.

The answer is to build up the infrastructure, so they have clean water, sewer systems and electricity. Perhaps a salt water treatment plant that turns ocean water into drinking water all over the coasts and then transports water inland to irrigate crops.

Many African nations are still several steps away from education systems and industrial systems.

Although I recognize that Africa needs help so do Americans. We have thousands, tens of thousands of homeless. We have returning veterans whose benefits do not cover living costs. We cannot even clean up New Orleans. There is a pandemic of bird flu accepted. The money should stay in the US to help Americans.

giving is not living. giving money only enables continued existence in the current state.

giving them money does not help.
giving them education does, not just western curriculum knowledge, but farming, housing, waste management... they need to learn to learn. giving a starving town money does what? buys food? hardly. we need to spend that money for them on shelter, wells, farming tools, seeds...

giving them a dollar a day just allows them to survive to the next, that is no life.

at the end of the day, they had kids in a famine, so suffering shall be their reward. not money. if you want to give money to those that really deserve it, donate to your local school or orphanage.
The catholic church has the power to change it, with over a billion converts, thats over a billion dollars a week that it makes if each person only gave a dollar on sunday, and we know the tithe is more than that, but they dont. why not? because the poor are of no purpose to the church, they dont want converts in africa, only the wealthy west. politics and religious power are the cause of continued poverty, mix that with parents choice to have kids there and you have a big problem. shame on all of them.

and if I was that hungry I would eat the dead. so they cant be that hungry.

I don't know who "we" are, but most of the developed world has been plundering Africa for centuries. Isn't it time to make amends a little?

Cowgirlpink: do you realize that if land is given over to raising cattle, you can feed one tenth the number of people? "Sacred" cows are practical from the point of view of getting the maximum yeild from the land and feeding the people. (In India)

We should stop giving money to Africa, we have plenty of starving children to help right here in America! If they wouldnt worship the "cow", but just eat it, they wouldnt be that hungry.
