My 2 male cousins and my sister and I had an odd little thing that became a weird sort of tradition. I'm 51 now; when I was 11, my family moved to a new house. The house had a small formal living room, where there was a very small cut-glass chandelier for the light fixture. The guys were a lot taller than my sister and me, and at some point they put a little red-and-green felt ornament from the tree up on the chandelier, too high for my sister or me to reach - just kids being silly. The next year, it was either still there (it's was very small, and not visible unless you're looking for it), or they put it up there again. My mom left it there, and from that point on, every Christmas they'd check for the silly thing. Now we're all grown and have our own kids, and THEY look for it! It means absolutely nothing at all - it's just something silly we did that became a "must-do" at Christmas! To the best of my knowlege, it's still there - there's no question in my mind that all of us would be disappointed if we didn't find the silly thing every year.

I remember always having to go to bed extremely early, while the adults would be drinking. We would always leave a mince pie for Santa, and a glass of Brandy, plus we'd leave a couple of carrots for Rudolf.
We would always have a stocking on the end of our beds, which would be crammed full on Christmas morning. We weren't allowed any presents until we'd had breakfast, then the rest of the day was ours.
I still keep most of the traditions going with my own family, except we have our Christmas dinner on Christmas eve.
That way i can spend the whole day with the kids, and not have to worry about cooking.

We lit a candle and put it in the front window. The story is that the Holy Couple wander the world again every Christmas Eve looking for shelter; the only thing is, they could appear in any guise; the idea of the candle was to show they were welcome.
So if any old tramp knocked on your door after seeing the candle, you had to take him in, because it could be God in disguise!

We always ate a fun dinner (our favourite foods) on Christmas Eve and opened our presents then (we're of Dutch ancestry). As a child, I would wake up to presents stuffed into old pairs of Mrs Claus' pantyhose. You see "Mrs. Claus" always gave them to Santa when they got a run in them. I never minded because you can fit a lot of gifts into pantyhose because it's stretchy. Then we would go to church and after eat a big turkey dinner. We would then relax, playing or using our gifts while looking at the tree all lighted up.

We took it in turns each year to put the angel on the top of the Christmas tree and on Christmas eve night just before we went to be my mom used to light candles for us and we had to make a wish and blow them out, we did the letter to Santa too and left a brandy and mince pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph, I still light candles for my hubby and I on Christmas eve and we make a wish before blowing them out.

yes, i used to write a letter to santa.
my christmases were never excitable tho, i would always have to wait for EVERYONE to be there before i could open my presents. it took the fun away.
nowadays my christmas tradition is staying away from my dad cause he's an alcoholic and his fists do all the partying:(

We in many circumstances take the youngsters out to look at Christmas lighting fixtures yet mutually as i'm getting all of them buckled up my spouse takes the promises out of their hiding places and places them under the tree. Then whilst we get domicile the youngsters see the promises and think of we've fooled Santa into questioning we've been snoozing. That way mom and pa do not could desire to stand up so early on Christmas morning.
