Many businesses these days have their applications online, but for smaller companies, you'll need to hand in a paper application in-store. It might actually be better for you to NOT fill the application out at the store, because then you don't have to worry about being in anyone's way and you can take your time and fill it out well. Of course, there will be occasions when you go into a store and ask for an application, and they say, "Can you fill it out right here?" When I was job hunting, that would happen to me occasionally, usually when a manager was either currently available or a store was desperate for employees. In case this happens, be sure you have your list of references with you so that you can copy the information onto your applications. If you pick up the application and take it home, when you pick it up ask if there is a best day/time to return it. Some managers only work during certain times, some come and go, and some places don't want to deal with applicants during their busy hours. If you're picking up several applications at once, make a small note in the corner of the application with the time and day to return, and the name of the manager, if they give it to you. Then when you go back to turn in the manager, say, "I have an application to turn in. Is there a manager available?" If you've been previously told the name of a specific manager, ask for them specifically. Some stores have different kind of managers for different things, so if there's one specifically for hiring, that would have been the name they'd given you. When you meet the manager, hand in your application. Make eye contact, smile, and just be generally approachable. As such, be sure that you're dressed nicely. Don't wear jeans and a ratty sweatshirt. You don't need to wear anything too fancy; some slacks and a nice shirt should be sufficient. Be prepared to answer a couple of questions on the spot like, "Why do you want to work here?" or "What hours are you available?" I've also encountered the occasional on-the-spot interview. Like, legit interviews where they had me sit down with them and talk for 10 minutes. So if you haven't had much experience with interviews yet, or you're a naturally nervous person, try to prepare yourself ahead of time. I know I just gave you a lot of information. I've just had a LOT of experience with looking for jobs. If you have any other questions, definitely feel free to send me an email.
