I have a 10 gallon tank and i have a filter but i was wondering if i need an air pump for it? I'd prefer not to have one, but i don't want the fish to die in like 2 days...i'm thinking of getting a dwarf puffer and some kind of colorful fish. Oh and it's a tropical freshwater tank.

If you have a power filter ( hangs on the back or a canister type) you do not need an air pump too. I use airpumps along with power filters because I like the look of the bubbles, and also I believe increased aeration is beneficial, but if you are using a power filter you do not NEED a pump. Also, puffers are generally considered brackish water. ( Half marine) and they need live food on a regular basis. Live tubaflex worms work great.

You don't need an air pump if your filter can provide some surface agitation on the water.

And I would suggest that you skip the idea of adding dwarf puffer in a small community tank. Dwarf puffer will nip the tails of all your other tropical fishes, so you seriously want to aviod them.

You dont need an air pump, cause you already have a filter. Also watch out with th dwarf puffer because if they get eaten by another fish the fish will die, because they are toxic.

You will need some kind of mechanism to move air and water around the tank. I had a pair of mini puffers and loved them. With a 10 gallon tank, that's about all you'll be able to have.

I have an air pump in my 10 gallon. The fish like the bubbles and it helps aerate the water.

As long as you have a trickle of return water pouring back into the tank from above the water line you do not need an air filter, there is enough air and water movement from the little return water's waterfall.
