I think I have the speakers hooked up correctly but the sound doesn't work.

There are 3 jacks on the back of the soundcard... sometimes it's hard to distinguish the symbols or colors. Look for a light green one.. that should be the speaker output. If all else fails, get a cheap Creative Soundblaster add-on PCI sound card. It will be compatible with the most old games.
