The size of the document or file you are saving wil depend on how many you can save onto a 1 GB disk. If your files are 500KB or smaller your can save more. If your files are more than 1000KB than there is going to be less space to save things...

"One gigabyte is roughly equal to 18 hours of MP3 music (at 128 kbit/s).
One gigabyte is roughly equivalent to 11 hours, 40 minutes of Flash video "

Ok are you ready for this? Lets start with a bit which is a short word for the binary digit: either 1 or 0 in the binary number system. The binary code is how the computer works using transistors on the CPU which has millions of them. A transistor is basicly a on off switch thus 0 off 1 on. Have I lost you yet? There is 8 bits in a byte and 2 bytes make a word, still there? There is 1,000,000,000 bytes to a gigabyte. Or 500,000,000 words to 1 gig. Next is kilobit and megabit but we will skip that because most of the files that you will save will either be kb (kilobyte) or mb (megabyte). A kilobyte (kb) is 1000 bytes. A megabyte (mb) is 1,000,000 bytes. So lets say you want to save a file that is 6 kb you would mutiply 6 times 1000 bytes and come up with 6000 bytes which then you would divide that into the amount of bytes in 1 gig or 1,000,000,000 bytes divided by 6000 bytes which is 166,666 which is the amount of files that size you would be able to save. Now lets figure out a mb (megabyte file) Take a 6mb file multiply by 1,000,000 come up with 6,000,000. Now divide the (hold on beer break ok!) 1 gig or 1,000,000,000 by 6,000,000 or 166 files so in other words a 6mb file is huge. Most of your files will be kilobytes. To tell how big the file you have right click on it the go to the bottom and click on properties it will show you size on disk which is how big the file is. So to put it bluntly ALOT OF FILES probably more the you would need if you are going to 4 years of college!!!

A 500 page novel is around 1 megabyte. One gigabyte is 1024 megabytes.

1 gigabyte is 1024 * 1024 * 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

How many assignments you can get on it depends on how big the assignments are. Check out the size of the files you want to save, and how many, add it all up and then you will know.

Here we go.....

Gigabyte is 10^9 one billion 1,000,000,000 bytes.

So if you do the math....

byte's
The fundamental data unit of personal computers, a byte is eight contiguous bits. The byte is also the basic unit of measurement for computer storage, storing the equivalent of one character. Computer architecture is based mostly on binary numbers, so bytes are counted in powers of two (which is why some people prefer to call groups of eight bits "octets"). The terms kilo (in kilobyte, abbreviated as K) and mega (in megabyte, abbreviated as M) are used to count bytes (even though they are misleading, since they derive from a decimal base of 10
