The electoral college voting system is designed to represent each state fairly and such, and make sure that only a select few who voted would know the canidates. Also because they predicted that the commone people wouldn't know anyone from outside their state/general local area.
But this system was designed hundreds of years ago. Now, each state had different populations to count. There are no 'three-fifths' of a man anymore (slavery) and voters would know all canidates through the internet, TV, newspapers, and general media.
So here's me question now: Should we rid ourselves of the electoral college voting and let the voters chhose our president, and let the country be lede by someone IT wants to be lead by, not some 100 or so senators?
You tell me.

The electoral college is an anachronism from the time when the fast form of communication available was the pony express. Not only should it be eliminated, but the long gap between election day and inauguration day should as well, to prevent the possibility of last-minute lawmaking by people who know they have nothing to lose, and are therefore no longer accountable (like Bush trying to sneak Bolton's nomination through again).

I have mixed thoughts and feelings about this issue. I believe in the true form of democracy. Government appointed/elected by the people. And in the case of the 2000 Presidential Election, a majority of America wanted Gore, but the way that the states overall voted...the Electoral College votes went to Bush. That's one reason why I would like to see it eliminated.
But on the other hand...if the candidates were voted solely on the popular vote, they probably wouldn't even think to enter the smaller populated states. Me being from Ohio...I'm not much affected by that...but it's still the idea that they won't campaign to every state. They would only go to New York, California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, etc. They wouldn't think about some of the New England States or some of the western states that are not that heavily populated.
In case someone is not aware of this...I will tell you what and how the electoral college works. Lets say that Bob Smith and John Doe are running for president, and the state under question is Ohio. When the votes are counted, the majorit of the people of Ohio voted for Bob Smith, the 20 electoral votes from Ohio would go to Bob Smith. And the number of votes are bases on the Number of Representatives and Senators in Congress. (Every state has at least two electoral votes because every state has 2 senators) And how many Reps are in Congress per state is determined by the population of the state according to the latest census. And of Bob Smith can obtain at least 270 votes out of the 538 votes, then Bob Smith will be the next president.
Again, I have mixed feelings about this issue. Another reason why I think we should NOT get rid of it is because it is a tradition of this country. I don't know of any other country in the world that has elections quite like this. And it is more fair than popular vote. If the states overall don't want a candidate, then why should they be elected? Just something to think about.

The purpose of the electoral college was
1) To balance the idiots who vote and
2) So that there can never be a faction - even if that faction is in the majority.
The idea is that it sucks when the minority governs over the majority but the same goes the other way around - protecting the minority from the majority.
The electoral college is the only way to make sure that everyone's right will be protected. Besides, what better way to protect those rights than in a larger republic?
--------------------
For example, if this discussion was divided by factions and based on majority rule , thepenismighter will be totally shut out. But since it's not, he can freely express his ideas.

2 factors come to ideas: a million. The electoral college supplies a touch extra ability to the smaller states. it really is no longer inevitably undesirable. lower than direct election, you would by no ability see a substantial candidate contained in the Dakotas. 2. are you able to imagine a nationwide recount contained when it comes to an intensive election? imagine Florida and 2000 became messy?

NO! This is one of the most important functions of our country! I want to add a constituional amendment that protects the electoral college insures that the liberals don't undermine our system and destroy it!
And I want that amendment to provide for fines and jail terms for people who try to subvert it! However, tar and feathers would be acceptable as a punishment.
Removing the Electoral College is like some stupid, mad, unqualified doctor removing someone's wrong organ.
The reason that liberals want to get rid of it is for the same reason they want to sign up illegals to vote, and for the same reason that they've in the past sunk ballot boxes to the bottom of the ocean. They sense that somehow it hurts their cause, and they care nothing about the well-being of the United States and the reason that the Electoral College is there, but rather only that they get their scummy creeps into power.
