Being smart requires time and commitment, but it's worth striving for. Although we will never learn "everything there is to know", fortunately, each step on the path gets us a little bit closer to the goal. We can never lose anything by striving for this goal--In fact, we can only gain something! There aren't many endeavors that offer this guarantee to us.
Steps
Read! Books, novels, articles, newspapers, whatever.
Play smart. Crosswords, lexicons, word searches, brain teasers, puzzles, and sudoku will make your mind sharp.
Take courses on anything that interests you.
Learn to play an instrument. Take lessons and practice often.
Read quotes and think about each one and all the meanings.
Travel to new places and try new things, gain experience.
Keep a personal journal and record your opinions, emotions, and reactions to the things that happen to you each day. This will help you articulate your thoughts.
TV doesn't have to be a "boob tube"! Commit to watching at least one news program a day, preferably world news versus local. Find at least one of the countries they talked about on a map, whether it be offline or on. Don't forget the game show Jeopardy--there's nothing wrong with having fun while you are learning!
Tips
Subscribe to "Word of the Day", which is available on many portal sites online or at www.dictionary.com. Besides just reading the definition, be sure to read the examples of how the word is used in a sentence. This will help you use the word correctly and also help you to retain the meaning.
Warnings
Don't be obsessed with trying to learn everything too fast. Spending too much time on becoming "smart" may leave your other responsibilities undone and possibly cause "burn out."
Don't overwhelm yourself with information, books, etc. It's too hard to retain knowledge this way. Fortunately, most of the tips provided here take no more than 30 minutes to complete--some a lot less! This will allow you to participate in a few activities each day. You will feel good about how much more you know in just a few short weeks! This will give you incentive to keep learning. You just may end up competing (and maybe even winning), on Jeopardy someday!
