They were not called Les Habitant!

Someone mistakenly told the owner of Madison Square Gardens way back in the day that the H in their logo stood for habitants. When in fact it had nothing to do with that. The C surounding the H stood for Club de Hockey Canadien. (Prior to 1917 they had a C surounding an A which stood for le Club Athletique Canadien.) Anyways it's just a nick name that stuck.

When created a second time, quebec owner (speaks french.) Told English speaking Montreall owner that an h in the middle meant "cool." (Or something like that) But the h made Fans give the team a nick name starting with H. Thus the Habs.

P.S. Montreal may change its name to the Habs as the teams full name.

It's a nickname that comes from the french word Habitant, which means inhabitant - or settler, or small community...along that vein.

The key part of this is that the Canadiens were the "French" hockey club, as opposed to the Montreal Maroons, which were the "English" speaking hockey team at the time (early 1900's).

The "Habs" was a way to say "We are the originals, the Real team."
