How does my computer clock / calender stay working when I unplug it to go on holiday, does the C.P.U. have a rechargable battery, or what.

Zeus pally you unplug them for saftey reasons when the house is empty, for 2/3 weeks. You could say the same with a laptop with a flat battery that also looses all power.

Yes all the answers are correct BUT.....
When windows logs on your time is updated with an atomic clock....

cos it's got a little internal battery that keeps the clock going but eventually it'll stop (mine did after about 7 years), so before I can do anything I have to reset time and date or the computer's files get confused. It'd be easier to put new one in of course but it's a palaver on an apple. If I've switched computer off but it's still plugged in then there's enough juice to keep the clock going without resetting time.

Why would you want to unplug it?

Sorry didnt know you were going for that long!!! in that case you are right!!! you dont have to worry about unplugging it for the reasons the others answerd the cmos battery will keep a trickle charge going to the ROM chips wich hold the bios and computer clock settings!!!

There is a small battery on you mother board. The battery can last 3 to 5 years support your system time etc. After that you'll find it keeps lost settings and time, that time you need to change the battery.

There is a large button cell battery attached to the motherboard. This keeps the clock running and also ensures your usb devices, mouse etc, settings are kept running.

a battery called cmos it looks like a big watch battery on ur motherboard. it keeps all ur data safe after poweroff, also the clock updates its self every few mins when its online. at the website time.windows.com
