As has been pointed out, requirements vary from state to state. There are a few states (as I remember Missouri and Georgia are two) that require only a business license. Most require specific prior experience, generally around 5 years. In some states, like Nevada, a P.I. license is really nothing more than a special benefit for retired law enforcement officers who worked in that state.

I agree. Each state has its quirks. In Texas, you have to log a year under a licensed investigator. Then you take which is a very simplistic test and pay the licensing fee.
