Dead people are cool... literally. the living are jerks usually.

Because, people don't realize what they have til it's gone is one theory. Or, they just feel sympathetic to a person who is dead; (more common.) People are less complimentary to the living cause they don't need to feel sympathetic.

People don't say good things about dead persons. They say good things about dead persons in presence of relatives and friends of the dead person. The reason is obvious... they don't wish to hurt the relatives/friends.It also helps them in 'networking' so that they may get benefited.
Another reasons could be like this... don't we all feel nostalgic about very small events of our past... we feel those were great days... simply because we can't go back to our past. If you recall today's events after, say, 5 -10 years you will feel... "those days were so wonderful" . But today you just feel 'normal' and not 'wonderful' since you are not missing it. Similarly, when someone dies we know that we can't meet that person again and miss the goodness of that person... so we say good things about the person... but we may fail to see the goodness of a living person since we don't miss out on the goodness.

The fact is whenever someone dies we will note see him or her again, so we pretend to love the dead and praise them. Moreover in my Continent that s Africa, we have special funeral arrangements for the the dead which may serve us as a source of fund so if you say the bad that the person did the relative will not end any fund. To the Christian faith, we believe that if say say good things about the dead he or she will be considered in heaven by the Almighty. For the living we are still with them they may be our enemy so we criticise them , unless he or she does something adorable for you.

At first,i would like to appreciate u for putting up such a question,who ever read your que' would have surely pondered with their thoughts,futhermore it would have stirred thier spirits high.
Recently when mohammed yonus got the noble award for his venture with his grameen bank,the noble awards committee came forward saying that thier biggest regret is that they never had the oppurtunity to offer it to the father of the nation mahatma gandhi.What really happened was the british community thwarted every move which were made to honour the great man with which every noble award official yielded..my point is just to illustrate that it happens even to the best minds..
it can be best explained with puting yourself into evaluation.If u possess something for a long time, it will just be a mere bauble,but when u lose it youll realise its worth.
this sole reason stands as an answer.

The dead is gone for ever. He can make no amends for any wrong doing. Neither can he defend himself against any accusation, justifiable or not. Everything about him has come to an end. Above all, it is self-dignifying. You have shown yourself capable of making the choice to spend your time and energy on something worth your while.

They cannot defend themselves.
There is a saying that says, Never say bad about the dead and the mighty.
The other reason is they may come and haunt you as a ghost.

I reserve some of my harshest criticism for dead people, so I don't know what you're talking about. If I were acquainted with you, I might be your friend; but as soon as you died, I'd be saying all kinds of filthy things about you. But then that's just me. Everybody's different.

it is human mentality that when we prise anyone, most of the people get proudness, inturn which would sometimes bad for us.
But in the case of dead, they can not listen. and u will have no physical or mental problems with them once they leave the world and it is our curtesy that we atleast sould comeout with the good things they have done.

It is all because of fear.
Everybody, at least in his/her inner mind, believes that the dead are enormously powerful and know everything we do or think.
Who wants to invite their wrath by displeasing them ?
