In my family we use ornaments that my suster and I made in school and we use multi color lights. We don't use garland because my Mom says that it makes the tree look cluttered.

Anything and everything--clutter be hanged!
I have a preference for multicolored lights, and deck the tree with ornaments that follow no special theme at all. I have some mercury glass ones, china ones, plastic ones, and metal ones. I have a couple ornaments that really mean a lot to me, such as a stained-glass looking one that is all that's left from a set made for me 33 years ago by a friend for my first Christmas with my former husband, and the ones with my sons' names on them.

~White, red and green lights with all the crystal ornaments at the top so the cats don't get to them.
~Silver bells all over, one for each Christmas i've had since I was born
~Small Christmas balls and a light sprinkling of icecicles throughout
~And some random ornaments that I made when I was little.

I like purple, it's so festive & rich looking! So I have purple ornaments. Then white twinkling lights, and of course a white star on top! :)
I also use the ribbon instead of garland.

I used garland...it makes the tree look fuller and more merrier. I also use small bulbs that match with the color sceme and other ornaments. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
