I'm interested in picking up a new intstrument and I'm having a bit of trouble deciding. I've narrowed it down to the violin and the piano and I was wondering if anyone could provide some outside perspective or opinions on the two for me!
I like the violin's ability to sustain notes, its portability and the mood it can lend to sadder songs (think the Schindler's List Theme). I'm drawn to the piano because the player can use both lower bass-like notes and the higher lead-like notes at the same time, and although it's not as portable it can produce some great sounding stuff with only one person playing.
I play the guitar decently, but I'm not that interested in playing rock, folk or classical guitar. If it helps my musical tastes include Aphex Twin, the later more abstract Radiohead and Erik Satie.
Thanks for the help, guys!

Here are some ideas
1) Remember you can't sing along while you play the violin , but you can while you play the piano.
2) Even though you can't pack the piano, you can the violin, but practiceing daily you build muscles holding up the violin. If you play the violin at least an hour a day, you will probably be pretty good at arm wrestling after a while.
3) Sitting at the piano is not much exercise except for your fingers, but the violin especially exercises your arms and fingers.
4) The violin has nice sound which you can sustain, the piano has a sustain pedal which when used correctly sounds beautiful. If you get a keyboard , it has less keys, but some have the ability to get loud or soft by touch like the piano. They also can make different instrument sounds, like violin, strings, trumpet, flute, etc.You may want a nice keyboard.
5) Who said you had to only learn 1 instrument. I learned them both.
6)You do best learning what you like best.

I play all three, Guitar, Piano and Violin. I learned Piano and Violin when I was young. I like the Violin also but it will never give you the satisfaction that playing piano will. Piano also teached music theory that will help you with the Guitar. It may be easy to pick up the Violin since you already are used to fingerings and having one hand move opposite to the other. Violin is OK if you are going to use it somewhere, otherwise I hardly ever play it . I can sit at the piano and amuse myself for a long time. However, playing Guitar is the best, how cool is that?

Uhm, both are beautiful instruments. I used to play violin, piano too at one time. I'm into rock, metal, punk, etc, and I love when a band uses piano or violin in music like that it's really interesting. But I have to say violin would be an easier transition, being that you play guitar.

I play the violin, and I really enjoy it. I used to play the piano, but to me the piano is not as exciting. Plus if u played guitar it should be very easy for you to pick up the violin. Piano is great, and it can b fun, but to me it wasnt as challenging as the violin.
For a person who used to play the guitar, i would reccommend the violin. The only reason I would reccommend the piano, is because you could probably pick up the songs faster.

Go for the piano because you can play nice radiohead stuff on it. You can translate any artist into piano more easily that violin. AC/DC sounds good on piano but difficult on violin. Theres a free piano resource at pianobible.com that you can pick up free lessons. And you can chat on skype for free while learning. I don;t think anything on that site requires payment. Let us know which instrument you go for in the end and if theres a free violin site.

PIANO!!! I played the violin for a while and I didnt really like it. I think the piano is easier once you get used to the chords. I still play it. The piano can also high or low. With the violin, it can only go high.

I'd go for the piano :-) It is the more challenging of the two, and you can add all for voices with it...with violin you generally carry the soprano. I love violin but If I was you...PIANO all the way :-) Hope this helped!

If you are looking to play in an emsamble, it would probably be better if you play the violin. You might want to plau which ever instrument is easier for you to get a hold of.

I would say Violin due to the fact that once you learn a stringed instrument you pretty much know them all.
