I spent 5 weeks in Alberta this summer when my first grandchild was born. Being a U.S. citizen, I expected Canadians to be proud of their country and was careful not to say anything that might be offensive.... at first. Then, they started talking to me about how many people in Alberta would rather join the U.S. and separate from Canada! I was surprised, but they went on to explain their reasons, and they do have good reasons.

I suspect that the people of Alberta would go for it if given a chance, and they have natural resources that would strengthen the U.S. economy, so our government would likely agree too...... except that Canada would lose the economic resources and likely fight it tooth and nail.

Best Wishes to my Canadian friends,

Sue

Canada will be a Dominion, and will stay with the Queen. They have no desire to become a part of the USA. They are good neighbors and friends. WE should live in peace with the Canadians. What flack ?

Mmm.. The two Canadian provinces that are crucial for Canada are British Columbia and Quebec. Quebecoises WILL NEVER agree to be part of the USA, while British Columbia (according to my PERSONAL opinion) has more in common with Washington State. But in order to that to happen it needs to Quebec to become an independent republic, and then British Columbia would be able to become another US State.

Prince Edward Island! No, seriously .... read "Ecotopia" by Ernest Callenbach (written in 1975) and now considered a "Classic" in Utopian literature circles. Just think ... British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California form a great NEW COUNTRY and virtually have it all!

You love controversy, don't you? :)

I wonder how many thumbs down I'll get for answering!

Anyway, Alberta is by far the most "America-friendly" province. However, I think most Albertans -- those fed up with Canada, anyway -- would rather form their own country as opposed to becoming a U.S. state.

Canada is Canada and USA is USA.
Why would anyone wish for the entire continent to be one country. There would have to be many changes made to each country before this could happen.

None.
I hate guns, but don't try it. I'll enlist right away, even if I'm too old.

But if one of the northern states wants to join Canada - I would suggest Vermont. Maybe Maine too?

Alberta has its fair share of conservative, homophobes that do not like social progression or change, they would fit quite nicely in with the hate the Bush administration has put forward, besides Ralph Klein is an alcoholic wing nut, if he is a closet pedophile they would have it made (tho he is retiring)

I don' think any Canadian would give up the perks of being Canadian to become American. I think with the way things are now maybe you should rewrite your question to what American state should join Canada. At least until Bush is gone!
