Well. If you don't understand the cars take it to a dealer technician (Honda for Honda dealer, ford for ford dealer et.) Because they know what to look in THEIR cars. They know what might be gone in time. You'll pay max $100- $150 but you get a solid record of what should be done for this car, or what are the current adn coming up problems.. Trust me. I did my last 2 cars. I took the report back to the seller and got a great discount and fixed them in a family owned garage (they charge less than the original dealer) :)
Good luck

Please check the car fax report. This can give you important details about the car history. I'm not huge or an engine specialist, but be sure to check for oil leaks, not only near the engine but also under the car. Test drive the car and don't make an impulsive purchase. When dealing with used cars, if you are not 100% comfortable making the buy...walk away!

1-Check around the car for rust or dent around the body.
2-Look under the car to see if is oil on the floor and if the engine is greasy. If it's, is because is leaking oil and gasket is gone
3- Check is muffler is ok, and if is smoke or noise when running. (will not pass inspection).
4-Check for "check engine light" and "air bag light". If it's on, will cost a lot of money to fix the problem
4- Take a ride in it. Check if it hesitate and if is steering wheel will not shake in your hand. If shakes, the rack-and-pinion (bar that connects the two front wheels), is gone
5-Cleanliness inside
6-Title.Check if the owner have the title. If not , is because he didn't pay the car in full yet.

everyone knows what it takes to make a "pretty" car so i will leave the dent checking and paint scratches to you.
you want to know about reliablitly...look at the previous owner, sterio, wheels, custom stuff. these are all signs of a teenager driver which probably didnt take care of it. ask the owner what kinds of maintanance were done recently...check the oil on the dipstick, check the trans fluid...heck, check all fluids. if things do seem out of place, do they appear to be cheap fixes? ask lots of questions about past maintanance or things breaking, and who fixed them. or, just bring it to a shop and ask what the mechanic thinks. also, the most important quesion i always ask....WHY ARE YOU SELLING IT???

The list is quite extensive.
Have you searched something like AAA, or just Google "check list used cars" .

Make sure that it's not just a plastic model if you're buying it on e-bay. I thought "$350... What a deal!". I won't make that mistake twice.
