Why dont you ask him about his stay in Europe, where he stayed, what he got a chance to see. I used to play football and i can think of lots of things more interesting to discuss on a first date than blitzs and cover packages. If you dont know anything about the game of football, dont pretend to or he will see right through it. If you are really curious then you should ask him, he should be flattered and if he plays at that level should be knowledgable about the subject. Just dont try to force the issue, football may be the last thing he wants to talk about during his time away from it, especially if your as beautiful and sincere as you sound about trying to make a good impression.
