I bought a laptop a month ago and today everything was fine until a bit of tea was spilt over the top (lid closed) i thought it would be ok, i turned it on and it worked fine until a couple of hours later when i went to use it again, the screen is just black, if you turn it to the light you can see the contents. It's just like the brightness has been turned down but it hasn't, any ideas what might be the problem and what i can do? Thanks

Thanks for all the help, i think it could be the back light, i've tried every thing else, inc changing the brightness and pressing buttons, nothings working. I could claim on the insurance but means i will have to pay the excess which i can't afford at the moment, im really gutted as i've only had it a month.

Yep you lost the backlite part of your LCD. If you bought it new get hold of the manufacturer and tell them the problem. Make sure you register your machine first on the online site. then wait a couple of days. Don't say you spilled tea or they may not be able to claim warranty. I hope this helps you out. "PEACE"

I doubt it is anything to do with the tea, because you can connect an external monitor to a laptop there are additional functions available to switch the screen. Or it could be that the screen brightness has just turned right down.

Best thing to do is to try pressing the Fn button down whilst pressing each of the F keys in turn (so try F1 then F2 etc), hold the keys for a few seconds and see if there is any change. Some of the keys might have a blue icon on them as well as the number/letter label so see if anything looks like a monitor and try that.

I had a similar problem with my laptop after it want to sleep and then the monitor just stayed black but I managed to switch it back on with the Fn keys.

Good luck

Its probably nothing to do with the tea, i had something similar with my laptop a while back. There is probably a small plastic button that sticks up and gets pushed down when you close the lid. The switches underneath can get stuck sometimes, try pressing it quickly as far as it will go 5 or 10 times and that 'may' cure it.

If its only a month old and that doesn't work take it back to the shop and play dumb about the tea :)

I had the same problem happen to me. I phoned a Computer repair shop and I was advised that it would cost me a lot of money to have repaired. The advice I was given was to claim from my Home Contents Insurance which I did and I received a brand new top speck laptop. It is worth going down that road.

The liquid has got to the circuit and damaged it, Unfortunately any repair centre will see that the liquid was the cause of the damage . You cannot claim a warranty repair. Claim on you insurance.

if you spill something on the internal parts especially a laptop you have broken it.

You are gubbed you may need to take it to a specialist for to explore the possibility of making a charge for the repairs as you may have fried the internals to the motherboard or a chip that sends the signals of display through your laptop as they are more sensitive than desktops and need to be mothered correctly...

The backlight probably burnt out. the unlucky area is, it expenses a bunch to get it fixed except you do it your self (this is rather annoying. i've got accomplished it till now and that's a soreness). the sole element you could somewhat do is a million) cope with it and get an exterior computer screen which you plug it into 2) take it into the shop or (in case you nonetheless have a guaranty) deliver it in to dell to get it replaced.
