It's also true with water going down the drain. It goes the other way in the southern hemisphere, because of the earths rotation.

My toilet doesn't spin in either direction when I flush it.

The water does, but that's usually because they are designed to cause the water to rotate in a specific direction to clean the toilet as they flush.

The northern and southern hemisphere answers are not accurate. On average, the northern hemisphere will have water, under no other influence, start to rotate in an opposite direction than the southern hemisphere, but the effect is very, very slight. It's called the Coriolis effect.

The Coriolis Force explains why the phenomenon of swirl happens on a huge scale--in the sky with prevailing winds, for example. The toilet swirl phenomenon has been explained using the Coriolis Force answer for ages now, but it is not the real answer! Apparently, the swirl in the bowl is determined primarily by water jet direction and the shape of the pipe. So, I guess in the southern hemispere the toilet bowl manufacturers make their bowls swing the opposite way from the toilet bowl manufacturers in the northern hemispere. Very disappointing--I like the idea of grand scale forces manifesting in our humble bowls.
