"On their way home to Scotland, the rank of the nine Scottish commissioners who had come to France to arrange the marriage contract were suddenly struck by illness, as a result of which FOUR of them died in one night, and James Stewart himself fell ill, although he recovered." From A. Fraser's Mary Queen Of Scots.
It was suggested Mary's Guise relations poisoned the Scottish commissioners, in case they had discovered Mary's secret contracts signed before her wedding that essentially gifted Scotland to France in case of her death.
