I need to do a speech that lasts for 5 minutes which counts for my English language GCSE (it's 30% oral) and I can do on absolutely anything I want and I really want to do it on Iraq.

The thing is I don't know what topic to do about Iraq. I mean, it's very obvious to go for the war, and I initially wanted to talk about how the war was unjustified but I wasn't sure how to approach that. Can anyone give me some ideas on this angle?

Also, are there any other topics about Iraq that I could do?
Thanks,
Lu

Great North Run - I'm sure it's the Land of the Two Rivers??? The Euphrates and Tigris...

Thanks anyway for the idea and thank you Mark a and Clusp - great ideas!

I think it was unjustified which is why I wanted to go for that angle.

I am from Iraq so yeah, I'm not likely to get up there and root for Bush.

But yeah, that's my opinion...

The future of an emerging new country:
1) Uniting the various different communities-what nationalism and patriotism means in this context
2) From your own view point what you think should be Iraq's foreign policy (i.e. give an outline of briefly her relationship with neighbouring sovereign states to date and what you think her stance would be in the future.
3) In general what life is like for the average individual and how this might change in the future, give examples
So you're focusing on the future with positive statements after a brief history of what has gone before. Other topics can include little known examples of food, clothing antiques etc historical facts not commonly known in the West, so as to heighten interest in the first stages of your speech.

A lot of politicians seem to be going for the "Saddam gassed his own people" option when the question of "where are the WMD's" crop up (Tony Blair's reason for heading into Bush's war) Yes Saddam may have gassed the Kurdish (some people say there is evidence to point the finger at Iran) but the original solution came from good old Winston Churchill who tried to gas them, many moons ago, after the second world war. Also, Saddam was funded and trained as a guerrilla fighter by the USA before he came into power. Do a bit of online research into these areas and I'm sure you'll find enough to talk about. Good luck.

Go and read the alternative news at Media Lense or Democracy Now and put forward alternative views to those in the daily newspapers here. That should make a few sit up and pay attention!

You might want to begin with the intelligence and how it was obvious that before Iraq was invaded that it was unlikely that they had the weapons. You might also want to cite reasons for the Bush Administration to so desperately want to go in, (oil, bush senior, etc.)
