for an electric pump:
half-fill a watering can (do not use a hosepipe as the pressure is too high!)
pour water down the pump outlet pipe, lifting the pipe so that the water goes all the way down to the pump.
it will take about 2 litres (half a gallon) to prime the pump.
switch on the pump.
most pumps are "self-priming", ie you only have to do this once, afterwards it keeps the water itself and does not drop the water back into the well.
the bottom of the collector pipe at the bottom of the well should have a non-return valve.

Oh.. that brings back memories.. how many times have I had to prime a water pump.. First you raise the handle.. then pour in...oh, about a gallon of water in the top part of the pump.. then start pumping.. It should work immediately.

Is this an electric pump? if so... You should have your pipe going down with a valve on it, then the pump. When you run the pump, it will disharge the water in the pump, creating a vacuum, which will pull the air in the pipe out, hence the water level will rise in the pipe. what you must do is to get a complete column of water, without air, below the valve. So, fill the pump, then run....repeat as many times as it takes. this will slowly pull the water up the pipe, getting the air out.
