What was life like in Arabia in the days of the barbarians?

I'm writing a book. One scene takes place in Arabia in the days of the barbarians. Who can give me information about what life was like then? What years were the barbarians at their height? What did the people who lived in villages then do with their time? What sort of business did they do? Why would they settle there? How did they protect themselves against the raiders?

I am talking about in the 600s. Like barbarians like Geghis Kahn.

Barbarians is a term for all non Greek speaking people! Arabia always, in this sense, has been in the days of Barbarians.
