Why do people consider Jewish a race? Isn't it a religion?

For example someone will say their mom was black and their dad was Jewish. I don't get that.

Jewish is a religion, but Jewish is also a race of people. Jewish is the newer word for Hebrew. Jesus is Hebrew/Jewish

its a religion and a race. the people of israel also called hebrews aka jews.
