I did hate it and other holidays at one time. I am part Cherokee. I know the history of how our European ancestors decimated our First American ancestors.

Yet, over time, and especially with children coming into my life and becoming deaf, community and family (as we define it) took on new and special meaning. So, even though some of the traditions remain, we reinvented it. I make this clear to my children. Ours is a tradition for us, but in a non-traditional format (no meat for example).

The early Christian Church did the same with Christmas. Most of the customs associated with Christmas and other holidays, such as Easter, were co-opted by the early church. Christmas trees were previously pagan trees with candles, festivals of light to bring hope and warmth in the middle of cold and short days.

So, you are perfectly right to continue hating Thanksgiving. You do not need to embrace the mainstream customs. I support and appreciate that. Just know that there are other options--options that mean you take charge and define these thngs in ways that are fitting and meaningful for you.

I hate that some folks will never realize how much they have to be thankful for. Even one day a year, set aside as a holiday to reflect on the many things to be thankful for, will not be sufficient for some to realize they are truly blessed in many ways.
