sounds like its running on its own oil, could be a blocked air filter, blocked cat, piston rings or a dodgy turbo if its a td

fivelight has no idea how diesel engines actually work...

The glow plugs are only there to heat up the combustion chamber in order to create enough heat to begin combustion. That's why the little glow light on the dashboard goes off after 10-15 seconds.

Most probable cause of loss of power could be clogged or dirty injectors, dirty air filter.
Loud tappety noise will probably be tappets - funnily enough. Fords usually use hydraulic tappets which adjust to the cam / valve clearance automatically by filling up with oil. These can fail, usually at high mileages.

When you say it "runs ok", do you mean it runs as it is supposed to, or just better than it does when it's smoking?

Take the thing to a trusted local garage, they'll be able to sort it out properly, but be warned it could be quite expensive...

time to change the glow plugs...if its running lumpy and smoking when cold but runs ok when at running temp then its most likely the glow plugs they can cost anything from 12 to 20 pounds for the four and simple to fit... they are something like a spark plug but heat up to burn the diesel.. good luck
