OK I am new at this whole thing. If I buy a 1GB mp3 Player can I get those 4-5GB flash cad things and upgrade it? Or are they all one piece and what you see is what you get? What about the ipods are they the same way?

Some flash based players offer expandable memory slots for SD cards. Generally, they aren't compatible with a card over 1 Gig, but that's not to say that in future models that won't be remedied.

However, one can store different genres of music on different cards, thereby creating a filing system of sorts for the music collection external from their MP3 player.

Hard drive based players, like the iPod, do not offer expandable memory.

And to correct a previous answer, 1 Gig generally holds no less than 500 songs. Depending on brand of the player and the size of the song files downloaded.

*Kingston 2GB K-PEX 100 Personal Media Player - Price: $113 - $127
*Ultra 1GB 14-in-1 FM/USB 2.0/Expandable SD MP3 Player - Price: $65 -$90

Most mp3 players are use as they are, so far I haven't heard of one you can use flash cards with. 1gb = 200-250 songs on average. And yes i-pods are the same
