If Quebec is its own nation why do we have to provide them federal funds from our nation? As their own nation, should they not have to provide for themselves?

It's our own fault. The French lost all legitimate claim to Canada in 1759 in the French Indian War. England allowed them to keep their culture, language, government etc. rather then telling them that this is now a English controlled region under the Crown and if you don't do things our way you can leave. We here in Canada ever since that time have allowed the French to complain and get what they want. It got even worse under the Trudeau Liberal government in the 1970's... Canada is and ENGLISH country under the Commonwealth of Great Britain, not France. The sooner the French in this country come to that realization, the better off they will be. Quebec can now be a nation within a nation but Quebec doesn't have any more autonomy over any other province. The "Nation" of Quebec is just a name, nothing more.

And to all the French in this country.. My Canada doesn't include Quebec. It's not yours, the land belongs to the Government of Canada.

Harper had it right in his speech yesterday: the Quebecois are a nation; Quebec is not. And I find it incredible that none of the English Canadian newspapers I've perused today so far (Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post and Montreal Gazette) today (Thursday) quoted him as he said it, they all translated his words to English as if he meant them to mean Quebec residents, substituting "Quebeckers", "Quebecers," and "Quebec" for his "the Quebecois" which he meant as the diaspora (which retains the French spelling as such for "Quebecois" in English, just as he spoke it: "The" in English as a definite article, followed by "Quebecois" actually an English word in this specific context but spelt as the French.).

Frankly, Harper would have helped himself if he had declared that the Quebecois as a nation are one of the 3 French speaking nations in Canada, the others being Acadian and Metis.

Consider, however, that Harper's specific words Harper also reinforce the view that the parts of Quebec not inhabited by the Quebecois are not part of the Quebec nation, strengthening the argument that if provincial Quebec can separate from Canada then the vast non-Quebecois north, and perhaps other parts of Quebec not wishing to be part of a Quebec country, such as Montreal and much of the southeaster quadrant of the Gaspe (where more houses and cars by far proudly display the Acadian flag and stickers and faux license plates than do the Quebec fleur-de-lys) can separate from the current geographic Quebec.

There are other countries that recognize they comprise different nations, Spain being the the most commonly cited today. Hell, in the United Kingdom they actually call them different "countries."

Ohhh was waiting for this one to come up... If they want to be unique or divided or separate or whatever they are calling it this week - cut em loose, they want to be part of Canada only to have Canada's benefits. But they want none of the responsibility in making Canada the great country it is. They have no more culture then the rest of Canada and just because they are french... So what we are going to cut loose New Brunswick too? If they want to go let them, but they shouldn't be able to retain the beneficial parts of Canada if they go. Its bad enough already that English Canada has to bow to them by equal signage BUT their signs are allowed to be French only or French and tiny English - Its total BS good riddance

It is an empty claim...means nothing but may keep the separatists quiet...so lets move on from this or we will look more and more like the US and their Mexico problem. Consider it like being 1st runner up in a beauty contest...you may get a title but for the most part you are still a nobody.

I agree whole heartedly with ice princess. Why should we bow to them (we already do too much in my opinion). I do not like Stephen Harper but I am glad he said what he did. If they want to go fine, but do not cater to them and let them still have the Canadian Benefits. That is going to far. You want out, get your own stuff is what I say.

Nation within a nation - undivided. It's just recognizing the reality. Let's hope they will be appeased by this recognition and stop thinking about dividing our country. Chill out.

I don't thik you are reading your newspaper - unless it's just a regional paper.
"nation" does not mean "country". We have always been considered as "two founding nations".
A Western Prime Minister is able to understand that - which means just about anybody should be able to understand!
