Only essential places should remain open no one needs to get out there on thanksgiving and buy a toy, this takes people away from there families just so a store can make an extra buck.

I don't have a job that works on holidays. I'm off all holidays. Most people who work in stores don't get 1 and 1/2 for working.

I'm surprised by a lot of the answers here so far. It seems that more and more that people are living to make money instead of making money to live. I have a life. It's not an ideal one, but I like it. I'd like to be able to stay home on holidays, see family and friends, etc., but every year it seems more stores and other businesses are staying open and for longer hours to scrape up another almighty dollar. Yes, if you are applying at a restaurant, it would be wise to find out if they are open on holidays and then decide if that works for you. But a lot of restaurants that weren't open last Thanksgiving or Christmas or New Year's Day, are going to be open this year. Grocery stores too. I know, I know, you've only had 364 days to get ready for this day. I do realize that there are emergencies, but for one, nobody gets paid on Thanksgiving, so it's not because they didn't have the money yesterday or the day before. But the bottom line here is that greed is taking control where courtesy and decency should prevail. And frankly, in my area, the people I see keeping all the shops open on holidays don't speak English. And a great many of them are buying beer and wine. It's not going to kill you for the stores to be closed a few days out of the year. So although I don't boycott these places, I do refrain from doing business with them on holidays because I know if nobody went there, they'd let their employees be at home where they want to be.

Restaurants are open today cause a lot of families don't want to bother cooking. Motels and hotels are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week there is no such thing as holidays for them or for casinos. Most gas stations are open and that is a good thing.
I lived in a town where everything was closed down every Sunday including holidays. If you were sick you couldn't get meds until the next day. That was a real problem sometimes!
Anyways the people that do work today are getting extra money so they can have a nice Christmas next month.

Hi There!

Well, I work at a place that is open on Thanksgiving, and I must say that I love it. I am actually away from family, and it gives me something to do since I cannot go and see any family. There are actually a lot of people that want to work on the holidays... at my store we get paid double time... and I like the pay check. LOL... I think that boycotting would be a little far fetched... because there are a lot of people that don't celebrate different holidays. I hope my opinion helps!

Thanks!

A lot of stores ask employees to volunteer on Thanksgiving. I always volunteer for Thanksgiving because I need the money and Holiday pay is great!

No. Not everyone celebrates thanksgiving anyway. It's just a day where if you live in America the stores are closed, like Christmas.

I'm sorry, but that is part of life. Those rules were probably there when you started working there--so I really don't think they would change the rules just for you. Find a job where there is no working holidays. Again, I am sorry.

No. The employees are free to leave and find another job elsewhere. Our small city has at least one large store and several small stores that are closed on Sundays and holidays.

The owner of the store calls the shots.
