Supposedly we would save millions because coins are more durable and we wouldn't have to keep reprinting dollar bills every year.

Trying to predict what the government will do is a fool's task. However, coins are expensive to make. Today, it actually costs more to manufacture a penny than a penny is worth. However, governmental spending often does not make economic sense.

Also, two recent attempts to manufacture dollar coins has been unsuccessful. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was often confused with the quarter. The Sacajawea dollar has practically disappeared from use only a couple of years after it was introduced.

If any dramatic change were to occur with our money, I think that the wise move would be to make bills a physically different size and different colors. Europeans are often confused by the fact that ones, fives, ten, twenties, and hundreds are all the same size and color.

As we become more of global economy, it would make sense to conform to international standards. It must have been difficult for the Germans to give up the Mark and the French to give up the Franc. Yet both countries switched to the Euro. It simplified monetary exchange throughout most of Europe.

Of couse, when is that last time that the birdbrains in Washington did anything that made sense. Look at the confusion with regard to Medicare Part D, the most recent economic brainstorm inflicted upon us by our government.

The government is going to introduce the new president dollar coins soon. However, people just refuse to give up the dollar bills. I must say, I like dollar bills better than coins. Coins are heavy.

They may be more durable, however they will be heavy and not something you can stick a few of in your wallet. Easy to get mixed up with other coins and just will really take from the American culture - as it would put a sad twist on the term 'buck'
