If you are not arriving in Amsterdam by train, go to the train station when you get there, you will have at least five people approach you about a place to stay. "Boatels" are cheap but not the greatest accomodations. I'd go with a B&B.

Depends on your budget....if you are looking for a nice hotel, try the American Hotel. It is in a beautiful setting and right off of Leidseplein, the party center of Amsterdam. If you want cheap, people keep recommending the hostel the Flying Pig.

I stayed at Doelen Hotel; right in the middle of everything in Amsterdam, can get everywhere on foot (well, that is not very difficult in Amsterdam, in fact). Very good breakfast included in the price.

I stayed in Novatel in Amsterdam. Stayed in the one next door to the station. It was quiet (although I would ask for a room away from the train lines) and clean. But if you're arriving late then I wouldn't go for Novatel, but that's cause they over sell their rooms. But that's a general point.

It depends on your budget and what facilities you are looking for. Hotels in Amsterdam are expensive so choose wisely.
There is an excellent and FREE hotel guide available at http://www.amsterdamreview.com
Good hotels include the Rho which is damn central and nice!

I've had two lads nights there, first stayed at the Renaissance, very good hotel and got a cheap deal. 2nd time at Amstel Boatel, cheap and cheerful. Ten minutes from centre. Check them out on holidays uncovered, remember, keep it in your trousers.

The Prinz Hendrich is reasonably priced and opposite central station. I stayed there last year and it is far enough away from the hustle and bustle to be quiet at night, but close enough to walk to the 'places of interest!'
