I'm just about to go on Alesse, and I wanted to know how long I have to wait before the pill kicks in? If I start taking the Pill the day of my period, and have not been on any oral contraceptives before, am I covered as soon as I start taking the pill, or do I have to wait a month for the effects to be felt? (I.E. would I have to use another form of birth control as well for the first month?) Thanks.

your doc should have explained all this to you before giving you the pill. if you take it on the 1st day of your period you should be safe right away, if you take it mid cycle then you should use another form of contraception for14 days

My doctor said a month for the pill to be fully operational. You would need to use another form of contreceptive during the first month on the pill. Hope that helps.

You have to wait til after a whole cycle of pills (one month) before you're protected.
