An Epiphone les paul or a Gibson les paul are definetly one of the bests. Epiphone is cheaper, but still gives the same kind of quality.
If you don't like strats, then the B. C. rich warlock is cool.

A guitar is what a player makes it. Look at Jimmy Page.. he plays everything from $80 Danelectros to $6000 triple neck acoustics, and they all sound great (with the help of his guitar tech). That being said, I have my own favorites:
