This system is in vogue in many societies. It all depends on the social norms that are accepted by certain soeieties. Nowadays the female foeticides are being done in order to prevent the birth of female children. If this inhuman tendency continues, the day is not far off when we may see that the payment of dowry to the bride and her family by the bridegroom and his family would be in greater demand.

It would seem strange nowadays because there's no reason for it. Back in the day, most women didn't work- ever. Most women went their whole life without ever working a job or earning any money, which means she never helped pay the bills, and the new husband (usually a young man just starting out with his career) was completely responsible for supporting himself and his wife, on what was probably a much smaller income than that of the bride's family. So, yeah, it makes pretty good sense that families used to pay a dowry when their daughters got married.

It used to be customary here in the USA too - a man paid a token sum for the bride to prove he was worthy and could support her. Some cultures practice bride Ransom - where the groom must beg of the wedding guests a specified sum ($50-100) or his bride will not return to the reception - again it is to prove he will go to any length to provide for her and in the future their children. Too bad we stopped because it was no longer fashionable it really would make you think how much you might want to marry some one.
