For the most part, National Enquirer has very low standards for journalism. It is not well researched nor do they care about verifying the facts of their stories. I think NE preys on the under-educated person, who is gullible.
However, having said this - there have been a rare few times that a freelance reporter has been able to publish a true 'breaking' story in NE, that went on to be verified - and then went on to be carried by all the major media outlets. This is due to the quality and truth of that individual reporter. The reporter had good quality.
This had NOTHING to do with the National Enquirer's corporate standards - which are low, low, low.

NO, basically they are all trying to get you to read the magazine and buy, buy , buy so that they can make money. It is the bottom line that they care about. BUt it goes both ways, if people buy the most outragoues the story they will continue to print those kinds of stories. It all comes down to supply and demand.

A mix of both. It's funny when they come out with stories that you don't believe and down the road they end up being true, though!
I personally enjoy flipping through them, but it's sad that they ruin lives, even if the lives of celebrities are considered "public."

Gossip, i'd say. What they do is either take rumors they hear that aren't necessarily true and elaborate on them or make shxt up.
