It all depends on the choice you make.
If you wish to be free... speak the truth. The truth will make you free... but you may also get beaten up by speaking the truth.
Now let's come to your question... Is it 'difficult' to speak the truth? Yes, it is very difficult in situations where you are likely to face a defeat or a set-back by speaking the truth. Fortunately, there are not many instances in life when we are forced tell a lie... if the number goes on increasing then our chance of survival will go on reducing... either our sub-concious will kill us or the world will kill us. We have to choose whether it's better to get killed by telling a lie or to get beaten up by not telling a lie whenever required.

It is not at all difficult to speak truth. However it is the most difficult art. Telling truth is the most difficult decision. One has to handle it delicately.
For example if you tell a parent upfront that his son expired. He may get a shock and become mentally unstable. You have to prepare him to a level that he can bear the shock of the truth.
If a person is being attacked and he kills the attacker in self defence and you are witness to it. Will you just tell the truth and risk his life in prison?
So a truth should be told to bring harmony and well being in the society and not to harm anyone. In fact a lie told to save a life is a kind of truth.

The most difficult truth is to your self. Lies are basically told or lived when a person is convinced the truth is unacceptable. Someone said truth is like love...it is perennial...it always comes again. Truth is like the elephant of religion....we only get partial insights...but as long as reality is not being deliberately messed with...all the little truths are like parts of a crystal...they fit together and give off light and life. Your own insight is the only one you are responsible for and you have a moral obligation to extend your consciousness to enlarge and encompass more difficult truth. Speaking truth is not as difficult as living truth.

It is very easy to speak the truth but it is difficult at times to face the consequences.

It's difficult on this answer forum because Freedom of Speech is limited and the truth is often not welcomed by liberals.
But it's generally easy, and once you have a resolve to do it, you'll find it hard to hold back.

It really depends on the honesty of the person. But someone who often lies usually doesn't lie because it is difficult to speak a truth. There are other multiple reasons. Lies are spoken to imprss others, or to save oneself from trouble, and to convince another of what one wants him to believe. It depends on the situation, really.

It isn't difficult at all...it just rolls off your tongue.....Its easier to tell the truth than to lie...To lie you have to concoct a story , you have to fabricate, you are trying to fool someone. Let the truth be told...sometimes the truth hurts...but its worth it....You can get caught up in a lie because you can't remember what you said previously, its funny how the truth will always stick in your mind.....So always tell the "TRUTH" it's easier to remember....

Are we talking "my dog ate your hamster", or "God is dead", here?
The first kind of truth is a matter of habit, and steeling yourself in a small way for what is to come.
The second requires a certain "self-overcoming" first, assuming that it contradicts beliefs and values that you've been brought up with. Indeed, some consider certain forms of truth-telling to be immoral, if it challenges others' fundamental beliefs. Leo Strauss is of this opinion (see source link).
