For any computer desktop or laptop , I recommend the following combination of security stuffs:
1. Good antivirus (best free one is AVG antivirus). if you already have something like norton,symantec thats fine. I don't recommend Mcafee.
2. Firewall(I recommend zonealram free version. other good one is kerio or outpost). Just one is fine.
3. Good spyware remover. I recommend install two of them such as adaware se personal edition and spybot search and destroy. both are free.
Actually, all free I have recommended. The last but not least is to select proper browser because most security problems starts from browsing habit. In this case, my one and only choice is to use opera browser (www.opera.com). it has the best track record of security(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_comparison#Vulnerabilities). its great.
Be happy with your computer experience with above combination. its all about the total experience.

You mean virus protection? Check out GRISOFT.COM but make sure you go to their site and not a 3rd party.

Forget the old song. Reputable companies sell their software to business users (its tax deductable I think) but often give away security software to home users to make the internet a safer place. That way more people use the net to shop online so they indirectly benefit.
Plus a percentage of people think like you and pay, thinking they get better protection.
You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo security suite.
You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or

I use the free = Avast = 4 Home Edition - Free antivirus software - free virus protection for home PC: - full-featured antivirus package designed for home usage.(FREE) = http://www.avast.com and really like it as it has always kept me safe from virus, worms, trojans, etc.,
The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates. + =
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.
